Understandably, a question we’re asked a lot is, “When is the best time to visit the ranch? What’s the weather like in June? July? August? September?” When you’re located at over 7,000 feet above sea level there’s no straightforward answer when it comes to the weather.
I spent a lot of time thinking about how unpredictable mountain weather is as we went on several lengthy hikes out from the ranch this past week. It’s unusual to have no snow, blue skies and temperatures in the 50s in early February but that’s what we got, and we were not complaining! Especially since the week before we were treated to sub-zero temperatures and howling winds.
Fortunately the weather during our season is generally really pleasant with the odd storm here or there to make us appreciate how great it is the rest of the time. June is springtime with wildflowers blooming and wildlife down a bit lower with their young. July and August brings summery temperatures ranging from the high 70s into the 80s (and sometimes 90s!) before things start to cool down again around the end of August and into September. We may get snow in September and we may be enjoying a picnic in November. You just have to roll with it and enjoy each moment.
